I first heard of Markus Lupfer through working in Chelsea. Lupfer has a cult following of Sloane Rangers who can't get enough of his knitwear featuring cartoon images, sequin embroidery and his signature lips motif. His Spring 2013 collection offered a diamond print to keep his current admirers happy, but it was his sleek galactic minimalism that grasped my attention. Muted golds, sheer fabrics and clean cut lines create an subtle element of space age fashion without rehashing tired cliches. According to Style there were whisperings that Lupfer was inspired by The Jetsons before the collection was shown. It appears that the Style reviewer was disappointed by the end result but I think Lupfer was spot on. Jane and Judy Jetson would wear these clothes in a Vogue editorial. If Lupfer had literally interpreted clothes from the cartoon show the end result would have been kitsch, cute but unsalable. Instead Lupfer has created many beautiful dresses and futuristic basics that are sure to be a commercial success.
